What is the impact of EDR on dentists' work?

A qualitative study of dentists' experience with Electronic Dental Records.

Although more and more dentists are electing to adopt Electronic Dental Records (EDR)their impact on dentists' work is not well understood. Hi Heather,
I have spent 34 years in dentistry and may be able to help you gather information and observations in Tucson. I share your interest and may find the exercise useful, now that I have Health Information Technology certification as a Trainer.

arden forrey (23 ), 01/29/2010:
I will just note that your location on Oregon complements the very recentestablishment of a Washington State Oral Health Coalition that has derinite regional interests in issues related to promoting EOHR uses in the Pacilfic Northwest. Collabortative work of UW Health Science Center and UW-SOD with OHSU as part of this DIOC Project would be very valuable to all participants.

Hi Heather,

this sounds like an interesting project. Can you provide some more detail? Are you going to look at particular activities within the dental care spectrum? What methods are you using to get your results? Are you considering also doing some quantitative analysis, such as time on different screens or utilization of software functions?

In a related comment, you may want to take a look at the statements about the impact of technology that Jeannie found in her masters project. (Irwin JY, Torres-Urquidy MH, Schleyer T, Monaco V. A preliminary model of work during initial examination and treatment planning appointments. British Dental Journal. 2009 Jan 10; 206(1):E1; discussion 24-5.)

Thx. + good luck with the project.
